CDR (R) John “Dawg” Gawne November 12, 2015

CDR John “Dawg” Gawne (USN Ret) was commissioned at Virginia Tech in 1987. Dawg received his wings of gold in 1990 and reported for training in the FA-18 Hornet.  His deployments included worldwide operations with day and night traps aboard the USS Midway, USS Constellation and USS Stennis.  Additional tours included attending Navy Fighter Weapons School (Topgun) and representing the FA-18 community in the Personnel Exchange Program assigned to No. 77 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force.

After leaving active duty in 1999, Dawg transitioned to the Naval Reserves flying the C-9B out of Virginia Beach, VA. Missions involved global logistical support, VIP transport, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Eventually retiring in 2008 after 21 years of service he is currently flying the MD-11 for FedEx.
