He was a pilot of an F-80C Shooting Star Fighter Interceptor (Aircraft #49-491), with the 36th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 8th Fighter-Bomber Group.  On 9 November 1951, while on a combat mission to bomb Korean re-supply trains, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, rolled over and crashed near Kangdong, North Korea. For his leadership and valor, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart (2nd Award, 1st wounded in Combat on 29 August 1951), the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leave Cluster.
